SG Activity - Creative Discovery

Famous scientists like Newton, Lavoisier, Einstein and Bohr are often renowned for their great creativity. What does creativity mean in science? Does creativity dawn upon us through the legendary ‘flash of inspiration’? Is it given to us by a Demon or a Muse? But how then can the idea of creativity be brought in line with the idea of discovery? Is discovery finding something that already exists, or is something created?

Professor Mieke Boon will address these questions from a philosophy of science perspective. In doing so she will challenge your own creativity and openness, as she will put forward ideas that might contradict with many of your beliefs.

Prof. dr. ir. Mieke Boon
Mieke Boon (1961) is Associate Professor in Philosophy of Science and Technology at the University of Twente. She received a MA degree (cum laude) in Chemical Engineering at Twente University of Technology in 1987, and a PhD degree (cum laude) in Biotechnology at Technical University Delft in 1996. She studied philosophy at Leiden University with special interest in ethics and philosophy of science. Between 2003-2008, she has been working with a NWO VIDI grant on developing a philosophy of engineering sciences. Currently, she is working on an NWO Aspasia/ Vici grant on a research project entitled ‘Using science in technology: towards a philosophy of the engineering sciences.’ This research aims at a philosophy of engineering sciences that provides a more adequate understanding of the role of science in technology.
